Icing Smiles is one of my favourite organizations. They provide custom celebration cakes for families with children suffering from life-threatening diseases. They work together with bakers and cake artists who volunteer as Sugar Angels. I have been involved with Icing Smiles since 2015, when I received my very first call-to-action.
Rylen is just the cutest little boy, and I was able to create a cake for his first birthday! His mom and I have kept in contact ever since then, and I will be making another cake for his birthday this October!
In the past few years, I have had a few more call-to-actions with Icing Smiles. My second cake was for a little girl named Emily, who asked for something bright and colorful! My latest cake for Icing Smiles was just last weekend, for a little boy named Dylan. He wanted a geology themed cake, with “emeralds and real gold”, so I created a smashed geode cake for him.
My other favourite charity is the Evening of Decadent Dessert! The Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre is an incredible organization here in Red Deer, Alberta. They offer programs and services for children with special needs, and their families. This centre is beyond amazing! The work they do, is so important!
The Evening of Decadent Dessert is one of their annual fundraisers. But not just any fundraiser, their biggest fundraiser! All proceeds from the event support Aspire. This year will be my 4th year supporting the event and donating cakes! I look forward to it every year. It is an awesome time! This year, the event is being held May 12. Tickets are on sale here!
The Evening of Decadent Dessert is a fantastic night out, with a champagne reception, buffet dinner, live entertainment, a huge silent auction, and the Annual Children’s Raffle! But the highlight of the night, is the live cake auction and dessert buffet. It is so exciting to watch all of these amazing cakes and packages being live auctioned by an auctioneer! Once all of the cakes have been auctioned off, they are cut and served along with many, many other cakes and desserts donated by local restaurants, grocery stores, bakers, chefs, etc. They then announce the dessert buffet to be open, and let me tell you…hundreds of grown adults rush the buffet and FILL their plates with dessert. There are trays and trays and trays of cake. It is AMAZING!
One of the reasons that I look forward to this event every year, is that I can design and create such a large showpiece! I can make these elaborate cakes, and showcase new or different techniques!
My first cake donated to this event, was the one above! A tree bark cake full of hand made sugar flowers. It was the first time I had made a bark cake, but it wasn’t the last! I still get many requests for this design even today! The next year, I donated this 4 tier golden beauty! Can you tell I have a thing for sugar flowers? I loved the jewel tones of the floral paired with the metallic cake. I made sugar succulents, pine cones, berries and lots of greenery. This cake was the first time I had used my airbrush!
Last year was my Marie Antoinette hanging cake. All 4 tiers were real cake, everything was edible, and it HUNG UPSIDE DOWN! How fun! It was the first time I had made a hanging cake, and now I’ve done quite a few!
This year, I have something even bigger planned…a mermaid theme. But not your typical Disney mermaids, it will be much darker and sultry. I can’t wait!
If you’re interested in attending the event, make sure to order tickets now! It is by far the most delicious way to give back!
